I thought I was in for a real treat when I finally decided to upgrade to a pair of Alden shell-cordovans. I'm sorry I bought them. A shoe this expensive should both look great (they do) and feel great (not). I ordered a half size lower than normal as instructed. The length is fine the width at the arch and ball of my foot is also fine. They fit OK at first.
The problem with this shoe is that the heel area is sloppy. The shoe does not securely wrap around the heel and ankle..the heel area is too wide basically. Now that I've broken them in for two weeks, when walking feel like I'm wearing a pair of slippers or flip flops the way back end moves around. I suppose I could wear thick socks, but then the middle of the shoe is too tight. I'm about to throw them away and go back to the Florshiem Imperial Kenmoore, which fit perfectly. I hope my wife doesn't see them in the trash.
What a pity; I really wanted to enjoy this shoe for years. The situation is probably only going to get worse as the shoe stretches over time and/or a hole in the glove lining forms from all the movement and rubbing. After searching online I found out other people have this same complaint...should have researched it better before buying.

Those of you accustomed to the exceptional fit and finish of an Alden shoe will NOT be disappointed here. The shell leather shines like a mirror. My family gave me these shoes as a birthday gift, and I was so pleased with them! They are very comfortable and beautiful. I can walk/stand in these shoes for hours without fatigue. The substantial build of these shoes does make for a heavier feel, but the super-comfortable footbed will hold up your weight all day.
As it states in the product info, the shoe built on the Barrie Last does fit a half-size larger than usual. So make sure to adjust your purchase accordingly.
