Going barefoot is best. I tend to live my life out of shoes by choice.
When weather or social situations prevent it, and Five Fingers are just not going to work, I use my Merrell Barefoot style shoes.
The laces loosen/tighten clear down to the toes, the tongue is centered with a nifty webbing stitch pattern that allows no-thinner-to medium thickness socks for cold temps.
Though thin with zero drop, the sole is stiffer than I'd like, but then in slush and wet ground feel takes a second place in preferences.
This shoe has proven itself waterproof, just don't step in standing puddles more than an inch or so.
