In far northern Minnesota lies the Mesabi Iron Range, a rugged and remote area from which iron ore was mined. The local residents proudly became known as Iron Rangers. The work boots they wore into the mines had to be as tough as the conditions. Red Wing's Iron Ranger was built with a double layer leather toe cap to provide the miners an extra measure of safety. This capped toe design would be the precursor to the steel toe work boot. The outside heel pocked provided extra support for the miners as they stood on their feet for ten hours a day. Putting the heel pocket on the outside kept a smooth and comfortable one-piece surface on the inside of the boot. These boots are as impressive as they are rugged.
