Work It Wednesday : Custom Dyed Wallabees

Posted by Liz J. on Jul 10th 2017

Clarks Wallabees have been worn for ages, but in the mid-to-late 90's, two-toned and custom-dyed Clarks were popular in the Hip-Hop scene, made popular by the cover art for Ghostface Killah's album, Ironman.

Well, for those of you that want to know how to dye your Wallabees, or any kind of suede shoe, we're going to tell you how you can DIY.

The most popular dye for suede is Fiebings, which can be bought online or in-store in a number of colors. You can also purchase dye from hardware stores or shoe repair stores, but they often only have shades of brown and black.

First, clean the shoes with a suede cleaner. Then prep the shoes by packing the insides with newspaper, and using masking tape to cover areas that you do not want dyed (such as the soles).

Pour a small amount of the dye onto a soft, clean cloth. Gently rub the dye onto the shoes by moving the cloth in a circular motion. Use as little dye as possible, but be sure to thoroughly cover the suede. It is always possible to add another coat of dye, but you do NOT want to saturate the shoes.

Be sure to allow the shoes to dry in a shady, well-ventilated area. Do not leave shoes outside in the sun, or anywhere that they can get wet or dirty. Once dry, you may apply more dye if you want a darker color.

Clarks Wallabees are casual and comfortable shoes that are great for work, can be worn with jeans or khakis, and are comfortable to wear. Some customers have stated that they run a bit large, so you may want to consider ordering a half-size up. If you have questions about sizing, feel free to contact our customer service department.
